Ⅰ. 2024 Candidate for Student of the Year | Hongbo Wang , PhD Student, Class of 2022, Institute of Medical Technology

Hongbo Wang , a PhD student from the Institute of Medical Technology, Class of 2022, ranked first in his institute’s comprehensive evaluation for the 2023–2024 academic year. He currently serves as National Executive Chair of China Youth Daily·China Youth Media, Vice Chair of the Standing Committee of the Peking University Graduate Student Representative Assembly, Director of the Health Science Center’s Youth Health Communication Center, and Class Leader of the 2022 PhD cohort. He has interned at institutions including Flag magazine of the Central and State Organs Work Committee, the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League, and the Shanxi Provincial Medical Insurance Bureau. Wang has earned numerous honors, including the Gold Medal in the 8th China International “Internet+” College Students Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, the Peking University Doctoral Scholarship, the “Top Ten Youth Volunteer Model” award, and the Peking University Excellent Student Award. His achievements have been featured in China Youth Daily, China Youth Volunteers, Doctor’s Journal, and other prominent publications.

01 Passionate Volunteer, Remains True to the Doctor's Mission

Hongbo Wang is deeply committed to the original mission of medicine: “Health is at stake, life entrusted.” He has contributed more than 440 hours of volunteer service. As President of the Peking University Health Science Center Youth Volunteers Association, he organized over 100 volunteer activities, recruited more than 1,700 volunteers, and coordinated over 7,000 hours of collective service. Four of the volunteer teams he established were recognized as national-level service teams. In 2023, he received the “Outstanding Volunteer Team Leader” award in the National College Student “Tuberculosis Prevention and Control, Volunteer Actions” program.

Wang also initiated education support programs in Qixia (Shandong) and Lingao (Hainan), benefiting over 1,000 students. In addition, he has advocated for vulnerable populations, organizing five volunteer events for children with hearing impairments and autism, serving more than 200 children. His volunteer stories have been widely covered by China Youth Daily, China Education Daily, Doctor’s Journal, and official platforms of the Peking University Youth League Committee.

02 Devoted to Science Popularization, Practicing the Youth's Responsibility

Wang actively contributes to public health awareness through science outreach. He founded the Youth Health Communication Center at Peking University Health Science Center, focusing on five themes: “Healthy China,” “Integrity at Peking University,” “Oral Health,” “Everyday Wellness,” and “Preventive Care.” To date, he has delivered 38 lectures on and off campus, contributing to the national Healthy China initiative.

As a lecturer for the Peking University Graduate School Youth League, Wang has conducted 15 theory-based sessions and health education workshops at more than 20 universities and three government agencies, reaching over 1,000 attendees. His efforts have been covered by platforms such as  Learning Power  and  Shanxi Youth Daily . He was also appointed peer lecturer for the Beijing Emergency Center Youth Learning Group and named a youth ambassador for anti-fraud campaigns by the Haidian Branch of the Beijing Public Security Bureau. In 2023, he participated in the national “World AIDS Day” promotional video alongside Peng Liyuan, Kang Hui, and Jin Dong, inspiring broader engagement in HIV/AIDS prevention efforts.

03 Serving Society, Bearing the Aspiration to Serve the Country

Hongbo Wang  sharpens his skills through hands-on experience. He has completed internships at  Flag  magazine, the “Create Youth” Studio of the Youth Development Department (Central Committee of the Communist Youth League), the “Youth Plum Studio” of the Central Committee’s New Media Center,  China Youth Daily   China Youth Media , and the Shanxi Provincial Medical Insurance Bureau.

He has operated public platforms such as “School Youth League,” “Create Youth,” “Flag Micro Platform,” and “Youth Observer,” which collectively reach over 34 million followers. He has published more than 120 signed articles with a total readership exceeding 4.4 million. In recognition of his media impact, he was named one of China Youth Daily’s “Top 10 Outstanding College Influence Visual Creators.”

Wang has also conducted social research in cities including Yantai, Jinzhong, and Jincheng, producing more than 50,000 words of research reports. He has received numerous honors, including Excellent Intern Leader (Yantai), and multiple awards for leadership and individual excellence under the Peking University “Li Xing Plan.”

04 Comprehensive Development, Showcasing the True Spirit of a Student

Hongbo Wang  is both academically accomplished and socially engaged. In addition to ranking first in his institute’s academic evaluation, he has received the Peking University Doctoral Scholarship, the Excellent Medical Student First-Class Scholarship, and the Excellent Student Award.

He is active in student governance, serving as Vice Chair of the Graduate Student Representative Assembly Standing Committee, Head of the External Relations Practice Department of the Health Science Center Graduate Student Union, and Class Leader of his PhD cohort. He has organized over 30 student events, benefiting more than 2,000 students, and has been recognized as an Excellent Youth League Cadre and Excellent Student Cadre by Peking University.

Wang has also demonstrated strong performance in academic competitions, winning the Gold Medal in the 8th China International “Internet+” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition and the Second Prize in the “Challenge Cup” Special Contribution Award. As a reciter, he has contributed to events such as the “Chinese Youth” Centennial Classic Reading (Communist Youth League Central), the Peking University May Fourth Youth Poetry Gathering, and the 111th Anniversary Gala of the Peking University Health Science Center, using his voice to inspire others with the spirit of youth.
