On October 23, 2021, the third election meeting of the MRI Equipment and Technology Committee of the Chinese Society of Medical Equipment (CSME) was successfully held in Beijing. CSME Chairman Mr. Zilin Zhao, Deputy Secretary-Generals Ms. Liping Sun and Mr. Zeshi Cui attended the meeting. Nearly 300 committee members, corporate representatives, and industry experts from 29 provinces and cities across China participated both online and in person.

Prof. Hongbin Han, Chair of the Committee, delivered a summary of the second-term committee’s work and reported on the organization and preparations for the third-term election to the CSME leadership. In accordance with the Branch Management Manual of the Constitution of the Chinese Society of Medical Equipment, the election was conducted under the supervision of Deputy Secretary-General Liping Sun. After the voting, Chairman Zilin Zhao announced the new leadership of the committee. Prof. Hongbin Han was unanimously re-elected as Chair of the third-term MRI Equipment and Technology Committee. Twelve experts—Zhaohua Zhao, Daoying Geng, Liangeng Gong, Ailian Liu, Haibo Xu, Qi Yang, Jiayin Zhang, Hongjun Li, Yanguang Shen, Youwei Li, and Yun Peng—were elected as Vice Chairs. Zhaohua Zhao also serves as Secretary-General. Sixty experts, including Feng Xu, were appointed as standing committee members.

Chairman Zhao congratulated Prof. Han on his re-election and expressed appreciation for the contributions of the second-term committee to the development of medical MRI technology and the industry. He noted the rapid advancement of MRI technology in China in recent years, with the technological gap with international standards steadily narrowing. Some domestic projects have even reached leading international levels, and the clinical efficiency of use has surpassed many other countries—thanks to the dedication of MRI professionals in China. He emphasized that the society plays an increasingly vital role in providing information services, technical consultation, policy support, talent development, and standards formulation for government agencies, healthcare institutions, and industry stakeholders. The association also serves as a key platform for medical-engineering collaboration, innovation, industrialization, and social responsibility, and it is a major force for promoting the translation and application of innovative results.

Chairman Zhao highlighted the central government's strong support for the work of industry associations and the new, higher expectations for their governance, staffing, and professional activities, which lay the foundation for healthy and sustainable development. He presented three expectations for future committee work: (1) All activities must comply with laws, regulations, and the society’s constitution; (2) efforts should be made to expand membership and improve services; (3) frontier research and collaborative innovation must be actively promoted. He emphasized that General Secretary Xi Jinping has clearly called for China to strengthen its capabilities in high-end medical equipment and break through bottlenecks in key core technologies. Achieving this goal will require joint efforts from the association, R&D institutions, manufacturers, and clinical practitioners.

In his speech, Prof. Han expressed sincere gratitude to the CSME leadership for its guidance and support in the election process, and to all outgoing committee members for their outstanding contributions to the committee and the industry. He stressed that 2021 is a pivotal year in China’s 14th Five-Year Plan. After over 40 years of reform and opening up, China has made significant achievements in healthcare and medical science. In terms of medical equipment and technology, the nation has moved from simply following international trends to achieving domestic substitution for many key products.

Prof. Han pointed out that, in this new historical phase, the Party and the state have placed higher expectations on the development of the field. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the society’s founding, and Mr. Zhao and Mr. Zhu have laid out a clear blueprint and roadmap for future development. The new committee will stay aligned with the society’s vision, build on the solid foundation established by the previous two committees, and, under the strong leadership of the society, remain committed to its mission, work with unity and determination, and contribute to safeguarding public health and realizing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

Following the main session, Secretary-General Zhaohua Zhao chaired the first extended meeting of the new standing committee. The meeting established the third-term committee’s secretariat and office, and discussed both the overall and phased construction goals. Emphasis was placed on promoting independent innovation in high-end medical equipment, developing standards and guidelines, cultivating professional talent, offering standardized training, and strengthening academic exchange and research translation both domestically and internationally. Committee members participated actively in enthusiastic discussions. The third election meeting of the MRI Equipment and Technology Committee concluded successfully in a vibrant and forward-looking atmosphere.
