To implement General Secretary Xi Jinping's series of important speeches on education work, strengthen the development of the youth teacher team in directly affiliated units of the Medical School, continuously enhance teachers' awareness and ability in curriculum ideological and political construction, and improve the quality of education and teaching, the Party Committee and the Labor Union of the Institution jointly organized the "Scientific Research Innovation and Teaching Excellence" Youth Teacher Basic Teaching Skills Competition.
A total of six young teachers participated in this competition. The panel of 11 expert judges included faculty from the college, hospital, functional departments, and guiding institutions. The judges were: Yang Ence, Associate Dean and Professor of the School of Basic Medicine; Ni Juhua, Professor of the School of Basic Medicine; Zhang Yingtao, Professor of the School of Pharmacy; Wang Shengfeng, Assistant Dean and Researcher of the School of Public Health; Yang Hang, Associate Chief Physician of the Cardiovascular Surgery Department of the Third Hospital; Ding Lei, Director of the Personnel Department of the Medical School; Cai Jingyi, Director of the Teacher Development Center of the Medical School; Dong Huihua, Vice Chairman of the Labor Union of the Medical School; Liu Xu, Deputy Secretary of the Student Party Committee of the Teaching Hospital; and three student judges. The event was hosted by Sun Xiaoyu, Party Secretary of the Health and Medical Big Data National Research Institute.
This competition focused on the fundamental task of cultivating virtue and fostering talent, with an emphasis on strengthening teacher ethics and professional conduct, as well as honing basic teaching skills. The main purpose was to promote learning through competition. The event was specially designed with two main parts: the competition segment and the presentation segment.
The competition segment included four teachers: Zhang Yan, Chen Yang, and Liu Xinyu from the directly affiliated units, and Man Shanshan, a teacher recommended by the Student Party Committee of the Teaching Hospital. Additionally, the competition specially invited Wang Hui, the first-place winner of the 24th Teaching Competition of the School of Basic Medicine, and Du Jian from the Big Data Research Institute, the first-place winner of the first Teaching Competition organized by the Party Committee of the Institution, to conduct demonstration exchanges.
Zhang Yan from the China Institute for Drug Dependence explained the application of calcium imaging technology in drug addiction, helping students deeply understand how technological innovation and its applications drive scientific research. Man Shanshan from Beijing Jishuitan Hospital gave a detailed lecture on the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of pulmonary thromboembolism, a clinical emergency, enhancing students' analytical thinking in solving clinical problems. Chen Yang from the Advanced Institute of Clinical Medicine introduced the primary and advanced structures and functions of proteins, starting with the modification of fluorescent proteins. Liu Xinyu from the Institute of Medical Technology explained the technical principles and development of optical coherence tomography, demonstrating the important role of engineering innovation in evidence-based medicine. Du Jian, Assistant Professor at the National Institute of Health and Medical Big Data, used the concept of medical knowledge graphs to introduce new approaches to medical research in the era of big data. Wang Hui from the School of Basic Medicine guided students to actively analyze and think about the pathogenesis of glomerular microalbuminuria, stimulating their interest in scientific research.

During the judges’ feedback session, the expert panel offered highly constructive comments for each participating teacher, covering aspects such as topic selection, instructional design, formulation of thought-provoking questions, teacher-student interaction, and logical reasoning. Both the contestants and the audience greatly benefited from the insights shared. After evaluation, Man Shanshan was awarded first prize in the teaching competition, Chen Yang received second prize, while Zhang Yan and Liu Xinyu won third prize. Du Jian and Wang Hui were honored with the Outstanding Presentation Award.

Prior to the official competition, the Party Committee of the Institution organized trial lectures for the participating teachers and invited Professor Zhang Weiguang from the School of Basic Medicine—an esteemed "Curriculum Ideological and Political Education Teaching Master" recognized by the Ministry of Education and a renowned teaching expert in Beijing universities—to provide one-on-one specialized guidance. Through this targeted mentorship, the participants developed a deeper understanding of the concept of curriculum-based ideological and political education and gained clearer insights into how to structure lecture logic effectively and introduce teaching themes in a skillful and engaging manner.
This Youth Teacher Basic Teaching Skills Competition is another concrete action by the Party Committee of the Institution to implement the fundamental mission of fostering virtue through education and to meet the requirements of strengthening teacher ethics and conduct. It serves as a vivid example of how Party building can lead and promote the development of academic disciplines and enhance educational quality. Starting this year, the Institutional Labor Union will annually select and recommend outstanding young teachers to participate in the Medical School's Youth Teacher Teaching Skills Competition.This initiative addresses the critical needs in the professional development of teachers under the new system in directly affiliated units, while also establishing role models to inspire young educators to pursue excellence in teaching and actively explore diverse educational models. The goal is to cultivate interdisciplinary talents who meet the demands of emerging productive forces. Looking ahead, the Party Committee will continue to promote the spirit of educators, uphold teacher ethics and conduct as the top priority, provide strong support for the growth of young teachers, and make greater contributions to the high-quality development of academic disciplines and the advancement of Peking University Medicine.
