On November 15, 2024, the launch meeting for the Major National Natural Science Foundation Project titled "Neurobiological Network Modeling and Application Research Integrating the Structure and Function of Brain Extracellular Space," led by Professor Han Hongbin from Peking University Third Hospital, was held at Peking University Health Science Center. The meeting was attended by invited guests including Wang Jiadong, Deputy Director of Peking University Health Science Center; Liu Ke, Executive Deputy Director of the Information Department of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC); Sun Ling, Director of Division 1, Information Department of NSFC; Zhang Lijia, Director of the Comprehensive Division, Information Department of NSFC; Wang Jiancheng, Director of the Scientific Research Office of Peking University Health Science Center; Xiao Yu, Deputy Director of the Scientific Research Office of Peking University Health Science Center; Dai Wanwei, Deputy Director of the Scientific Research Office of Peking University Third Hospital; and Cao Yuan, Director of the Planning Office, Discipline Office, Peking University Health Science Center.Academician Gu Ning from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor at Nanjing University, and the project expert group leader, along with nearly 30 national-level talent teams from the fields of information science and medicine across China, attended the launch meeting. More than 100 members of the project teams from Peking University Third Hospital, Beihang University, Southeast University, Shenzhen Bay Laboratory, University of Bern (Switzerland), Peking University Health Science Center's Institute of Medical Technology, and Capital Medical University Hospital also participated in the meeting.

On behalf of Peking University Health Science Center, Deputy Director Wang Jiadong expressed gratitude and warm welcome to the leaders from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), the project advisory committee experts, and the scholars and experts from across the country. He also congratulated Peking University Third Hospital on being awarded the Major NSFC Project in the Information Science Division. Director Wang reviewed the development history of Peking University Health Science Center, especially after its merger with Peking University in 2000, which created an environment fostering the integration of medicine, science, engineering, and multiple interdisciplinary fields. In particular, the intersection of medicine and informatics has driven the development of these two key disciplines at multiple levels. He emphasized that the project led by Professor Han Hongbin, titled "Neurobiological Network Modeling and Application Research Integrating the Structure and Function of Brain Extracellular Space," is a model of interdisciplinary collaboration at Peking University. It is also the first Major NSFC Project led by Peking University Third Hospital, a cutting-edge initiative that focuses on solving clinical medical challenges through the integration of medicine and information science.Director Wang hoped that the visiting experts, through the launch and the presentation and discussion of annual results, would offer valuable guidance for the project and provide insightful suggestions on the future construction tasks and development directions of the project teams.

In his speech, Executive Deputy Director Liu Ke of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) warmly congratulated the approval of the major project. He emphasized that the NSFC has always been committed to supporting the innovative development of fundamental scientific research in China, focusing on the cutting-edge of global science and technology and addressing major national needs, playing a significant role in building a technology-driven nation.Director Liu provided several directives for the project team: First, maintain the original mission, boldly explore uncharted territories, and deeply explore core scientific issues; second, work together, collaborate, and follow the leadership of Chief Investigator Professor Han Hongbin. The team should focus on the overall tasks and goals of the project, form synergy, support each other, and integrate interdisciplinary approaches; third, ensure ample communication and intellectual exchange, with the hope that the experts present will get straight to the point, identify potential problems, and offer suggestions for improvement. After the meeting, the project team members should promptly organize and understand the experts' feedback, compare it with recent research work to address any gaps, and make corrections as necessary. Director Liu wished for the successful convening of the launch meeting and expressed his confidence that under Professor Han Hongbin's leadership, the project team would successfully complete the research tasks and achieve the expected goals.
