Peking University Health Science Center Signs MoU with The Hong Kong Polytechnic University’s Faculty of Health and Social Sciences

On February 15, 2025, Vice President Wong Wing-tak of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) led a delegation to visit Peking University Health Science Center (PKUHSC). The delegation was welcomed by Deputy Director Wang Jiadong of PKUHSC, accompanied by Prof. Han Hongbin, Dean of the Institute of Medical Technology, among other representatives. During the visit, both parties engaged in in-depth discussions on further expanding cooperation in related fields and jointly signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Institute of Medical Technology, PKUHSC and the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences (FHSS), PolyU.

Attendees included Prof. Simon Shum, Dean of FHSS; Prof. Choi King, Head of the Department of Health Technology and Informatics; Professors Ip Shek-ping, Dr. Choi Yan, and Dr. Lai Tin; Dr. Yang Lin from the School of Nursing; Mr. Lau Man-biu, Associate Vice President (Campus Development and Facilities Management); Ms. Lam Shui-yin, Deputy Director of Campus Development; and Ms. Chow Wing-chi, representative of the Office of the Executive Vice President (Academic and Student Affairs). On behalf of PKUHSC, Ms. Liu Hong, Director of the Education Department; Dr. Wang Qing, Deputy Director of the Graduate School; and Ms. Li Xiaojia, Deputy Director of the Office of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs**, along with leading faculty and researchers from the Institute of Medical Technology, participated in the meeting. The session was moderated by Dr. Xie Zhaoheng.

In his welcoming address, Deputy Director Wang Jiadong expressed appreciation for the longstanding collaboration between the two institutions and acknowledged the positive outcomes of previous joint efforts in disciplinary development and student exchanges. He emphasized the strategic importance of academic cooperation between mainland China and Hong Kong, and encouraged both sides to further deepen their collaboration in discipline building and research innovation.

Vice President Wong Wing-tak thanked PKUHSC for the warm reception and affirmed PolyU’s commitment to developing interdisciplinary health sciences. He stated that inter-university collaboration offers valuable opportunities for mutual growth in education and research. In particular, he expressed hope for more joint projects in medical technology, including the establishment of a seed fund to support bilateral innovation.

During the meeting, Prof. Choi King and Prof. Ko Sung introduced their respective departments and training models. Ms. Liu Hong, Director of Education at PKUHSC, gave an overview of the Center’s teaching philosophy, educational resources, and students’ clinical practice performance.

Following the presentations, the two institutions signed the MoU and took commemorative group photos. This agreement marks the beginning of deeper cooperation and exchange in medical technology, as both institutions commit to exploring new models in talent development and scientific innovation.

Background

The Faculty of Health and Social Sciences (FHSS) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University has a history of over 40 years, evolving from the School of Health Services established in 1977. FHSS covers a wide range of disciplines, includingApplied Social Sciences (philosophy, psychology, social policy, social work, sociology), Health Technology and Informatics (medical laboratory science, radiography), Rehabilitation Sciences (physiotherapy, occupational therapy), Nursing and Optometry.

FHSS is a top-ranked faculty in Asia in fields such as medical imaging, optometry, radiotherapy, and rehabilitation sciences. It currently has approximately 6,000 students (3,844 undergraduates and 2,127 postgraduate students), over 1,800 staff members, and more than 51,000 alumni worldwide.

The Institute of Medical Technology at PKUHSC and FHSS at PolyU have maintained a long-standing and friendly partnership. Each year, the two institutions conduct short-term student exchange programs, sending students to each other’s campuses for academic observation and training. Together, they have co-hosted academic events such as the 2nd International Symposium on Medical Physics Education, Medical Physics Workshops and Forums, and the Beijing–Hong Kong Young Scholars Interdisciplinary Innovation Series, strengthening educational cooperation between Hong Kong and the mainland while fostering deep integration and mutual understanding among students from both regions.
