Dr. Mingwei Zhao is a Professor, Chief Physician, Doctor of Medicine, and Doctoral Supervisor. He currently serves as the Director of the Department of Ophthalmology at Peking University People's Hospital, Executive Dean of the School of Optometry and Ophthalmology at Peking University Health Science Center, Standing Committee Member and Deputy Secretary-General of the 11th and 12th Committees of the Ophthalmology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, Expert Member and Deputy Leader of the Sub-group on Retinal Diseases, Vice President of the Ophthalmologist Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, Vice President of the Ophthalmology Branch of the Beijing Medical Doctor Association, and Chairman of its Sub-committee of Optometry and Ophthalmology. He is also Deputy Chairman of the Sub-committee for the Teaching of Optometry and Ophthalmology under the Teaching Steering Committee for Higher Education of the Ministry of Education, Deputy Leader of the National Blindness Prevention Technical Steering Group, Deputy Chairman of the First National Expert Advisory Committee on the Visual Health Management of Children and Adolescents under the National Health Commission (2021), Deputy Chairman of the Sub-committee of Ocular Microcirculation of the Chinese Society for Microcirculation, Deputy Chairman of the Ophthalmology Committee of the Association for Medical and Health Exchanges across the Taiwan Straits, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Chinese Journal of Ocular Fundus Diseases, and Editorial Board Member of the Chinese Journal of Ophthalmology, Chinese Journal of Optometry and Ophthalmology and Visual Science, among other journals.

Dr. Zhao graduated from the Department of Medicine at Beijing Medical University in 1988. From 1990 to 1995, he earned his doctorate under the mentorship of Prof. Zhang Chengfen, a renowned expert in retinal diseases, at the Department of Ophthalmology, Peking Union Medical College Hospital. From 1997 to 1998, he pursued postdoctoral studies at the Doheny Eye Institute, University of Southern California, under Prof. Stephen J. Ryan, a world-renowned retinal specialist. After obtaining his doctorate, he worked closely with Prof. Li Xiaoxin in both clinical and research fields related to the medical and surgical treatment of retinal diseases.

In 2016, Dr. Zhao led the establishment of the School of Optometry and Ophthalmology at Peking University Health Science Center, and in 2018, founded the Optometry and Ophthalmology Alliance in Beijing. Guided by clinical needs, he has made significant contributions in recent years in areas such as photodynamic therapy (PDT) for central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC), treatment strategies for neovascular glaucoma, and predictive applications in idiopathic macular hole surgery. His representative research has been published in journals such as Nature Communications, JAMA Ophthalmology, Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science (IOVS), and Retina.

In 2019, he co-authored the Chinese Expert Consensus on the Diagnosis and Treatment of Neovascular Glaucoma, published in the Chinese Journal of Ophthalmology. He also published a commentary in Eye, the official journal of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (UK), elaborating on anti-VEGF therapy strategies for diabetic retinopathy, which generated wide recognition.

Dr. Zhao’s research has contributed to projects that received multiple awards, including the First and Second Prizes of the Beijing Science and Technology Progress Award, and the Second Prize of the Science and Technology Progress Award from the Ministry of Education. His work on neovascular glaucoma earned the Third Prize of the Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award in 2020 (as first completer). He has published over 200 papers in both Chinese and international journals as first or corresponding author. He has co-edited Basic and Clinical Retinal Pigment Epithelium and translated several authoritative texts including Volume 2 of RETINA, Atlas of the Retina, and Management of Ocular Trauma and Ophthalmic Emergencies. He is Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the second editions of Retinal Diseases and Vitreoretinal Surgery.

Dr. Zhao assisted Professor Li Xiaoxin in presiding over the construction of the national excellent course in ophthalmology. In 2006, he was awarded the title of One Hundred Outstanding Young Physicians in Beijing. In 2008, he received the Fangzheng Teaching Award of Peking University. In 2014, he was commended with the " Golden Key Award " of the China-US Ophthalmology Society and the first " He's Ophthalmology Innovation Award ". In 2016, he was awarded the title of " Outstanding Chinese Ophthalmologist " by the Ophthalmologist Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association. In 2017, he was awarded the title of " Good Doctor in Beijing  " by China National Radio. In 2018, he received the " Outstanding Leadership Award  " from the " Federation of Chinese American Eye and Vision Research  " at the ARVO Annual Meeting in the United States. In 2019 and 2022, he was respectively awarded the titles of " Top Ten Experts with Medical Contributions " and " Top Ten Experts with Outstanding Medical Contributions  " by the   Doctor's News . In 2020, he received the "  Outstanding Achievement Award in Ophthalmology " from the Ophthalmology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association. In 2022, he was selected into the international ranking list of Expertscape, a well-known European medical expert platform, ranking ninth in the world in the field of "central serous chorioretinopathy" and first among domestic experts. In 2022, he was awarded the title of  " People's Renowned Doctor  " at the Fifth Session by People's Daily.
